He died in Marrakesh in 1184.
He was vizier and chamberlain at the Granada court and later personal physician to the Almohade Sultan Abu Yaqoub Yousuf in Marrakesh.
The philosopher Ibn Rushd - known in the West as Averroes - was one of his pupils.
