He was born in Rochester, New York on June 25, 1894 and earned his B.A. in 1916, M.A. in 1917 and Ph.D. in 1923 from Harvard University. Awarded the Toppan Prize for his thesis on the Schleswig-Holstein Question, 1863-64, in the Division of History, Government, and Economics at Harvard University. Dr. Steefel joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1923 as instructor of History. He was promoted through the ranks and retired in 1959 as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Steefel was married to Genevieve and the couple had two children, Lawrence (born 1926) and Nina (born 1931). He died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 28, 1976, aged 82.ver menos
