It is designed to teach the Oromo language to those who can speak the language but are unable to read it; for those children who were born and live outside their homeland; and for those who are interested in learning one of the major languages of Africa. The Oromo language is spoken by close to 40 million people in Ethiopia and northern Kenya and is the second or third largest language in Africa.
The author, Taha Roba, himself a native Oromo and a refugee from the brutality of the former Ethiopian military regime, wrote this handbook because he realized a tremendous need for such a book. Drawing on his knowledge of six major languages, Amharic, Arabic, English, Italian, Somali, and of course Oromo. Mr. Roba has combined impressive easy-to-read-and-learn language with unique Oromo wisdom and idioms. He has weaved in Oromo oral traditions that are significant to usage, including terms of address and reference such as addressing genders separately and using different words to express acts and actions of non-human animals. For instance, in the Oromo language, we use different terms to mean “giving birth” for both animals and humans. The book has been arranged to be studied in chunks or as a whole, and addresses articles, adjectives, adverbs, and propositions, active and passive voices.ver menos
