She holds a doctorate in engineering management and has spent seventeen years in both industry and academia. Her work entails strategy development and implementation, improvement of business management systems, technology transfer, and the advancement of women in engineering. Hannelie founded the Women in Engineering and the Built Environment programme (WiEBE) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2006 and currently serves as ex-officio director of the programme in partnership with Group Five. WiEBE supports both student and professional women engineers, technicians, and technologists in South Africa. During her professional career, Hannelie has received various national awards for her contribution to industry and academia and was nominated as finalist in the 2014 Standard Bank Top Women in Business Awards.
Hannelie joined the BIE Group in 2010 after ten years at the University of Johannesburg where she worked as vice dean, head of department, and strategy manager. She is a fellow of the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering and serves on the boards of the South African Society for Engineering Education and the Metal Casting Technology Station at UJ. Hannelie is an international author and speaker in her field, and her work toward promoting engineering as a career of choice for women and the advancement of women in this sector continues indefinitely.
