As a historian, he has written widely on eighteenth and nineteenth-century Ireland, particularly in the areas of biography and historiography, including lives of the United Irishman Thomas Russell (2002) and the Young Irelander John Mitchel (2008). From 1997 to 2022 he was an editor of the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of Irish Biography, for which he wrote over 250 entries, mostly on politics, sport and popular culture.ver menos
