HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

Welcome to the world of Portuguese stories! Learning Portuguese by reading stories is the best way to consolidate your current language level and naturally increase your vocabulary.

This story is suitable for an upper-beginner (level A2) learning European Portuguese (Portugal). This story allows you to:

improve your reading and listening skills

consolidate your grammar and sentence structure

grow your vocabulary

practice your speaking with the help of the interactive exercises

This book is divided into the following parts:

How to work with the book

To optimize your learning while using this book, I recommend taking the following steps:

Read the story in Portuguese without help. It is important to test your knowledge on your first reading and try to understand the story without the translation.

Read the story with the translation. At this point, you can clarify questions regarding the meaning of words and grammatical structures. Using the glossary helps you to understand expressions and verbs.

Reread the story in Portuguese without help.

How to complement the reading with the audio:

Listen to the audio of the story without help.

Listen to the audio of the story and read the text simultaneously.

Listen to the audio of the story again without help.

How to practice with the interactive exercises

Preparation:

Listen to the audio with the exercises. This is not yet the time to try to solve the exercises.

Read the transcript of the exercises.

Listen to the audio of the exercises and read the transcript simultaneously.

Practice:

Each exercise starts with a statement about the story. Listen to the statement.

After the statement, you will hear questions about it. For each question, there is a pause so that you can answer the question. It's important to answer out loud.

After the pause, you will hear the correct answer. Note that there can be several right options.

Finally, repeat the answer out loud again.

Repeat the above steps from time to time. The secret of learning is in reviewing and practising!

Ideas for additional exercises

Do a dictation. Play the audio and write what you hear. Compare with the original text and correct any errors.

O rubi é vermelho e brilhante. Uma mão agarra-o e mete-o no bolso. Depois, a pessoa misteriosa embrulha-se no seu manto negro e torna-se invisível.

A Sílvia vive numa vila nas montanhas. A vila tem uma muralha à volta. Também tem muitas torres. A vila precisa de proteção porque há dragões nas montanhas. Os dragões raramente aparecem, mas quando aparecem a população fica com medo. Os dragões cospem fogo, por isso podem queimar as casas. Os dragões também têm garras, por isso podem agarrar nas pessoas e levá-las para o seu covil.

Há dez anos que os dragões não aparecem, por isso a vida na vila é boa. Os sapateiros arranjam os sapatos, os agricultores cultivam os campos, as costureiras fazem as roupas, os pedreiros constroem as casas e tratam da muralha. E a Sílvia? O que é que ela faz? A Sílvia encontra coisas perdidas.

As pessoas têm tantas coisas para fazer. Às vezes, esquecem-se de onde colocaram o chapéu, ou a espada, ou o colar de pedras preciosas. A Sílvia consegue encontrar tudo porque tem um poder. Ela fecha os olhos e vê uma imagem. Ela vê a imagem de um lugar. Depois segue pistas até descobrir esse lugar. E claro, até encontrar a coisa perdida.

A Sílvia entra na casa do talhante. O talhante, um homem grande de mãos enormes, diz-lhe que perdeu a sua melhor faca. Não é a primeira vez que a Sílvia visita o talhante Carlos. Ele perde sempre muitas coisas.

– Onde é que viu a faca a última vez? – pergunta a Sílvia a olhar para o interior do talho.

– Ontem. Acho eu. – responde o talhante Carlos. A Sílvia suspira e fecha os olhos.

– Como é que é a faca? – pergunta ela.

– É uma faca normal. Com um cabo de madeira. Ah, e tem o meu nome no cabo. Carlos Cunha.

Na mente da Sílvia aparece uma faca. É grande e é de metal. Ela vê a faca a brilhar e a cair de um balcão. Depois vê-a no chão, debaixo do balcão, no escuro. Uma aranha começa a fazer uma teia em cima dela.

A Sílvia abre os olhos e vê o balcão do lado esquerdo. Aproxima-se do balcão e baixa-se. Debaixo do balcão, lá ao fundo, vê uma faca. Uma aranha afasta-se quando a Sílvia coloca a sua mão em cima dela.

– Aqui está. – diz a Sílvia com a faca na mão. O talhante Carlos abre a boca, incrédulo.
