Tudo começa com um homem saindo de casa, armado, numa madrugada fria. Mas do que o move só saberemos quase no fim, por uma carta escrita de outro continente. Ou talvez nem aí. Parece, afinal, mais importante a história do doutor Augusto Mendes, o médico que o tratou quarenta anos antes, quando lho levaram ao consultório muito ferido. Ou do seu filho António, que fez duas comissões em África e conheceu a madrinha de guerra numa livraria. Ou mesmo do neto, Duarte, que um dia andou de bicicleta todo nu. Através de episódios aparentemente autónomos - e tendo como ponto de partida a Revolução de 1974 -, este romance constrói a história de uma família marcada pelos longos anos de ditadura, pela repressão política, pela guerra colonial. Duarte, cuja infância se desenrola já sob os auspícios de Abril, cresce envolto nessas memórias alheias - muitas vezes traumáticas, muitas vezes obscuras - que formam uma espécie de trama onde um qualquer segredo se esconde. Dotado de enorme talento, pianista precoce e prodigioso, afigura-se como o elemento capaz de suscitar todas as esperanças. Mas terá a sua arte essa capacidade redentora, ou revelar-se-á, ela própria, lugar propício a novos e inesperados conflitos?

Bizarre book, Pessoa style alike, with 3 generations reflecting on their own lives, those of previous and future generations and the world around them. Situated in Portugal so about dictators, revolution and politics in general. But also about what one really wants, what others would like him to be and how perception can be totally different then reality or your own self. The author is clearly gifted but exploits some style exercices a bit too much. A lot too much. Or a bit too much ... or a ...

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte einer portugiesischen Familie über mehrere Generationen, wobei das größte Augenmerk auf dem jungen Duarte liegt. Duartes Großvater ist Landarzt, sein Vater ist traumatisiert von einem Kriegseinsatz in Angola, seine Mutter erkrankt an Krebs. Duarte hat außer dem sogenannten Indio keinen Freund, wird gemobbt. Nur die Musik könnte für ihn Zuflucht sein, doch er hasst sein musikalisches Talent und hört auf zu spielen.Es gibt begeisterte Stimmen zu diesem Roman und auch sehr ablehnende. Beide kann ich verstehen. Der Roman ist sehr gestückelt und deutet zu viel an. Es wird dem Leser zu viel überlassen, zu wenig wird geklärt. Außerdem ist das Buch im ersten Drittel sprachlich sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig, mitunter ordinär und eklig. Das wird dann allerdings besser, der zweite Teil isst deutlich leichter zu lesen und hat (wie auch der erste Teil) hervorragende Stellen. Wie die Mutter ihren Tag verbringt, bis sie schließlich am Abend der Familie nach dem Essen ihre Krebserkrankung mitteilt, nicht ohne darauf hinzuweisen, dass sie vorgekocht habe, das ist nach meinem Dafürhalten ein grandioses Kapitel, einschließlich der Szene mit dem Haarefärben. Ich kann also auch die guten Seiten des Buches durchaus entdecken, zumal sich im Lauf des Buches dann doch einige Enden finden. Aber ich finde das Buch insgesamt eher unausgegoren und zu wenig stringent. Gerade lese ich auch eine Lebensgeschichte (Maarten´t Hart: Die Netzflickerin) und sehe den Unterschied: Hier wird vieles erzählt und weniger dem Leser überlassen, das gefällt zumindest mir besser.

I was hesitating about rating this book with 3 or 4 stars, so I took the average and rated with 4. While reading this book, I had mixed feelings about it, from "great" to "but what the hell…". João Ricardo Pedro built the history of three generations using as background the recent History of Portugal, from the Salazar's dictatorship - the so-called "Estado Novo" - to the Carnation Revolution military coup, including references to the Portuguese Colonial War. Humor and drama mixed in a short, fast reading book, with a fascinating writing style that certainly will not leave anyone indifferent, arousing conflicting feelings in the criticism. This is perhaps the book that pleased me most so far within the Leya Awards.
